The symposium is an event, open to all 2nd year Master students to have discussions and conversations around the possibilities they have after they graduate. We will discuss possibilities for your lives after Sandberg: Questions around legal procedures visa applications and setting up your own freelance practice? How to organise yourselves either around an art space or by applying to residency programmes? And how to find money to fund your projects?

The first session on Friday, the 17th of February, will be dedicated to funding opportunities.

10.00-12.00 De kunst van Anders (The Art of Different), presentation by Renée Steenbergen about urgent renewal of the cultural ecosystem in which artists are recognized as the core force in culture.
It’s time for some revolution in the art world! How can we change the old system, in which most artists don’t get fair pay, while managers of institutions earn a large income? How to organize solidarity that works effectively for and among makers? Your ideas and initiatives are most welcome and can be further discussed in this session
Dr. Renée Steenbergen is an independent researcher, author, consultant and curator.
Her focus is on arts policy, especially strategies for financing the arts.
She published books about art collecting and arts philanthropy (patronage).
Renée is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Life After Sandberg will focus on moving images, video, and film practices in the morning segment of the last day of the series. We will be talking about experiences working with this medium, discussing how to apply for specific film or video funding, how to describe your moving image-based practice for funding, how to apply or deal with film festivals, and how to re-interpret shows and exhibitions to host durational video pieces. We will have a panel talk to discuss these topics and experiences.

13.00 - 14.30 Artist Spaces in Amsterdam
In the afternoon we focus on the landscape of artist studios within the local context of Amsterdam. We give an overview of official and unofficial practices to appropriate space in the city. We discuss topics and organizations such as CAWA ateliers and apartments (and the check you have to pass to be officially recognized as artist), Broedplaatsen (small ones, but also big players such as Urban Resort who manage several buildings), artist-run studio’s, squatting, anti-squatting agencies, property companies etc. We also discuss prices, legal rights, the system of energy costs and the effects of gentrification. You are welcome to bring in specific questions and cases this afternoon, we will also share the resources. The session is moderated by Sjoerd ter Borg (Sandberg Instituut, chair of the board of Broedplaats de IJsbrand and former location scout/producer).
